Montana has no state trade license for deck builders. The Department of Labor and Industry requires construction contractors with employees to register, and it suggests asking for proof of that registration and checking that it's in good standing. Inside Billings city limits, decks need a building permit through the city's Building Division. Ask any builder for their registration, proof of insurance, who will pull the permit, and a written quote that spells out footings, framing, materials and warranty terms.
